Tribal Rev Volunteers

Okay... I KNOW I did this before but I can't find the post or the responses or...

... maybe I didn't do this before!

Anyway, several of you peeps out there have come up to me at various events and said you'd volunteer at tribal rev this year and that's GREAT!! I'm trying to assemble a list of volunteers and email addresses so that I can start to coordinate y'all! Most jobs involve things like checking passes at the door of workshops, taking and/or selling tickets to the shows, taking meal passes, hunting down hotel personnel for more water, etc..... Nobody's volunteer job will take away from your tribal rev experience by causing you to miss workshops, shows, or meals you are paying for! We promise!!

If you want to be on my official list o' volunteers, please respond here if you *know* i have your email addy, or send me an email to christina@bluelotustribe.org and I'll put you on the list.

I'll start organizing you wonderful volunteers next week!

Back from Tribal Fest!!

... and we had a rockin' good time!! The highlights.....

* hanging out with the Skellramics chicks every time we needed to get out of the sun (thanks, Kelly & Natasha!).
* taking tons of great workshops... especially Laura. Seemed like she took 3-4 every damn day!!
* teaching our two workshops. Our students were the best and we had so much fun with them!!
* performing!! We did a 15 minute set, complete with our finale guest, Karim Nagi and a buncha our friends standing off to the side grinning at us. (video coming soon!)
* shopping.... we all did way too much of it!
* chillin' with our Hipnotic homies and glad to have more Chi-town tribal representation there!
* parking lot rehearsals
* very amusing conversation with the Shell gas station lady when we went on a chips-n-chocolate run.

Yeah.. it was a blast! We hope to go back again and we hope to bring more of the Midwest with us!

Tribal Rev hotel block deadline looms!!

May 23 is the last day you can reserve a room in our block at the Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village (the official Tribal Rev site). At last report there were 5 Thursday rooms and 2 Friday/Saturday rooms left. If the block is sold out I'll try to get us a few more rooms today. If you've not booked your room for Tribal Rev, DO IT NOW!! 847-437-6010

On May 23 our block closes and you'll be back to paying full price for your room at the Holdiay Inn. There is a list of other area hotels on the site too if you're looking for options.

Tribal Rev photo shoots?

Hey everyone! We were wondering if there'd be any interest in setting up a photo studio at Tribal Rev with a professional photographer to do one hour shoots. His rate is $250 (he's really good... he's shot BDSS!!) and he would require a $100 deposit. There are limited time slots available (max 10) for troupes or soloists. Is there any interest? He'd need to book a few (with deposit) before June 1 to be able to come out here from New York. Interested?

Easily one of our favorite events recently was the Rak the Boat Bellycruise!! We've been invited back and we're doing it baby!! Bellycruise '09 dpearts for 7 days from Orlando Feb 28 and will go to Nassau, Bahamas, St. Thomas, USVI, and St. Maarten!!

Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!!

Our at-sea days will be filled with workshops by JimBoz, Princess Farhana, Bahaia, and yours truly (at least Christina and Audrey, but maybe more Loti will join us!!)

Tribal Rev hafla performer info is up!!

This year we're doing the hafla lineup for Tribal Revolution a little (okay, a lot) differently. We have more and more folks asking to perform and a limited amount of time to fill with performances. As a result, we're going to video submissions to choose our hafla performers. Details are listed below:

*All performances must be Tribal Improvisation or Tribal Fusion belly dance.*

Please submit a 3-5 minute recording of a single performance either on DVD or through an online link. The performance must be in the same style that you plan to perform in the hafla (i.e. sword, improv, goth fusion, etc). Your submission, however, does not have to be the exact same performance or choreography you plan to dance in the hafla.

All dancers must take 2 workshops or the equivalent of 2 workshops per person in a troupe. For example, a troupe of four must take 8 workshops between them. If one troupe member can’t take workshops then other members can take extras to make up for her.

Participants must be registered for workshops by May 1st to be invited to perform or the next performer on the wait list will be invited to perform in their place.

Quality of performance in technique and execution

**Please note: Due to time constraints and the growing popularity of Tribal Revolution, we may have to ask veteran Tribal Revolution hafla performers to take a step back to make way for new performers this year. We know our old Tribal Rev friends will understand!!

We will contact you by April 15th to let you know if you have been accepted.
Performers will be given one free hafla ticket and a $5 rebate per workshop upon arrival at Tribal Revolution.

Tribal Rev Holiday Inn News

If you are trying to make your hotel reservations for Tribal Rev at the Holiday Inn, please be patient. We've been having the crazayay weather and it's affecting phone and cable lines all over the area. Our lovely hotel is no exception. Their phone lines are down and they're working feverishly to get them back up. The folks at the Holiday Inn 1-800 number will not be able to book your reservation because it's in a block. The Hotel has to do that internally. If you *really* need to reserve your room NOW, email me at christina@bluelotustribe.org and I'll give you the email addy of the woman who can help you.

I'll post again when the phone lines are up. Meanwhile, if you're in the Chicago/Milwaukee area, get thee to the store and pick up some hot cocoa and a few movie rentals. Could be another foot of snow tonight!!

Moria and Kami workshops and show postponed.

It pains me to say this, but BDSS has had to pull Kami for the tour and our event was only viable with both her and Moria teaching and performing, so we're going to arrange the same great weekend for another date in the future (most likely in the fall). Tribal Rev peeps, we need your opinions!!

Audrey and I just returned from a planning meeting with this year's site, the Holiday Inn, Elk Grove Village, and man, are we excited about it!! This is by far a better site than those we've had in the past and we are really looking forward to Tribal Rev '08!!

Here is some of what's in store for you this time around:
* extended day on Sunday. We've added another class slot
* not only drumming, but MELODY music classes!!
* the entire event is again all in one place... classes, shows, vending... all of it!
* the hotel has a bar/restaurant that will be open late for the after parties
* the return of lunches! Both Saturday and Sunday will have lunch options
* the return of the enchilada pricing! Save a bundle by signing up for everything all at once!
* nicer hotel rooms than ever at the same price as we had before! Fridges, microwaves, and coffee in every room!

We have a few more options we want to put out there and get a reaction about before we settle things with the hotel. Please give honest feedback on these ideas.. .. Remember, we want this to be YOUR event!

1. The hotel has an atrium breakfast, but it's usually pretty crowded *without* our event going on. There is also a Starbuck's within walking distance. The hotel is offering to create a continental breakfast buffet for Tribal Rev hotel guests only on both Saturday and Sunday to expedite the breakfast process so you can all get to your morning classes. This would be an opt-in that would cost around $10 per person and would go onto your room bill. Do you think you'd be interested in having this option?

2. They also brought up with us the idea of having a pre-show Mediterranean buffet dinner for participants. This would be an intimate dinner in the atrium just for us and will potentially include live music. From dinner, you can enjoy the gala show. The dinner would be another option at $20 per person. Again, level of interest? FYI other restaurants in the area include Wendy's, Panda Express, McDonald's, Baker's Square, and Spaghetti Warehouse.

We will base our decision largely on the responses we get here, so please speak up!

Hi all! This is being discussed in the Tribal Rev opinions thread, but I thought I'd give it a life if its own....

Amanda and the other fabulous ladies of Rakhshanda in Milwaukee are in talks with Paulette to keep her out here for a few days to offer her certification program, much like the Hipnotic ladies did with Kajira last year. Amanda is asking that anyone interested please contact her via tribe and let her know so she can get an idea of how many folks are interested and where they're from or where they will be. The certification may take place in either Milwaukee or Chicago or some point in between. Hopefully, Amanda will post here and keep us up to date on stuff!!

Sunday, November 18, 3:30-5:00: Lucious Layers with Christina:

Layering is taking more than one body isolation and combining them together at the same time. This workshop will explore simple layers such as combining arms with torso and hip isolations and work towards more complex layers such as layering shimmies over basic moves as well as combining torso and hip moves. This is a technique workshop only. No choreography will be taught, but we will work on several layering combinations. Tuition $25

Hi-

Just wanted to congratulate one of your tribe members on a job well done last night at the Smoke Hafla. Andrea's belt almost fell off, but she rocked it like a true professional in what was perhaps the best costume malfunction save I've ever seen, by spinning very fast while tying it- it actually looked good rather than a mistake! And I loved her costume.
I've been wanting to take a class, y'all are the last big tribal group in Chicago I've yet to check out. Looking forward to doing that soon.

It's that time again! The time when Blue Lotus Tribe takes on new apprenti and trains them in the ways of the Loti (we're like Jedi except that our swords don't glow and make swishy noises). These two ladies have been hand-picked by us for training. Hopefully by the end of the year they'll be fully bloomed and will be able to move things with their mind as well.

Everyone, please wish Laura and Megan luck (they need no luck in dancing... only in dealing with our silly butts) as they embark on what may possibly be their most ridiculous dance journey.

Just wanted to say that I had a blast hanging out with the Loti on Wednesday night at the Martini Room in Elgin. Christina & Audrey were amazing as ever and Andrea's solo took my breath away.

It's a residency! I'm so excited! Third Wednesday of the month in Elgin, right off 90 at a beautiful, comfortable, candlelit lounge with an awesome DJ. Who could ask for anything more?

Tribal Rev lost and found

We ended up with a couple of extra items after Tribal Revolution. Please claim them!!

one plastic purple water bottle with a black screw-on lid and an insert that allows you to drink from it without getting hit in the nose wity your ice (neat!!)

two pairs of harem pants purchased from Marrakech.. one red, one blue... both in a cool Indian print. These were found in the hallway at the Days Inn and turned in to us, unworn, with the tags still on them. Ocean was able to really basically describe their owner, but had no name to give us. It would be a shame for someone to lose these forever.

Another sad departing......

Well, friends and fans, it's time to say goodbye to another beautiful lotus.

Brandy came to us 2 years ago with Andrea and Anna and has been a model troupe member from the beginning. Her hard work and attention to detail were much appreciated by the other members of Blue Lotus Tribe. She is also a sweetheart, lots of fun to hang out with, and pretty entertaining with a few drinks in 'er! (sorry, love...couldn't resist).

Brandy is going through some pretty big changes both in her personal an professional lives and so, wanting to focus on other aspects of her grand plan, she has elected to step away from Blue Lotus Tribe and pursue other interests and goals in life. We want everyone to know that Brandy's parting is happening on the BEST of terms and that there was no funky fallout or anything of that nature. We spent much of Tribal Rev weekend trying to remind her how much fun it is to be "one of us" and she agreed, but her mind is made up.

Please join me and my Blue Lotus sisters in wishing Brandy all the best. I'm sure we'll hear from her from time to time and you may just catch her in our audience sometime in the future.

Brandy... we loveya baby!

Request: Ride to Tribal Revolution Workshop

Hello Everyone,

I could really use a ride to the 2:00 workshop on Friday. I am traveling from South Bend, IN by train and will be arriving at the Metro Prairie Crossing station around 12:45. The station is about 1.5 miles away from the sports complex. If anyone driving can swing by and pick me up before class I'd be forever grateful. The rest of the weekend is already taken care of. I just need to get there!

Milwaukee AIDS walk

Hello!!

Christina asked me to post this here as well. The Milwaukee AIDS walk is alot of fun, and for a great cause...let's keep talking about this!

we would like to put a "team Trillium " group together for the AIDS walk, September 29th, and would like to see who would be interested in participating. We could give out bindis , and break into spontaneous shimmies along the way. I am going to be doing it anyway, but it would be way more fun with a big group of bellydancers!!!!

The official call for Tribal Rev volunteers......

Hey everyone! Several people have spoken up to us about their willingness to volunteer at tribal rev and we really appreciate that!! Now is the time for us to start organizing our list of volunteers and assigning them to tasks throughout the weekend. Volunteer duties may include the following:

* Door checkers... making sure everyone entering a class has the proper workshop ticket
* Ticket takers/box office workers for the gala show and hafla
* We have our stage managing crew for the show, but we may need a runner or 2 for things to go super smoothly
* Setup and breakdown... we will need a few volunteers to come 1-2 hours early each day and/or stay 1-2 hours late to help with basic setup/cleanup duties. This applies to the hafla and the show as well.
* Vendor assistants... again, this would necessiatate coming early/staying late to help vendors setup and breakdown (hallway vendors will have to move their tables into the vendor room overnight)
* Floating volunteers...these fine folks will do things like direct traffic, give the 5-minute warning on class start times, answer basic questions, seek out Blue Lotus Tribe members to answer questions they cannot, and maybe run an errand or two if there's a need for supplies, water, etc.

Volunteers will *NOT* be asked to:
* Handle registrations and check-ins
* Babysit vendor tables
* Set up vendor merchandise (although you may be called upon to help vendors load in or out)
* Miss any part of any class they paid for... ditto for the show/hafla

What do you get? Our undying appreciation and a nifty official Tribal Revolutionista T-shirt (the yellow ones make you official.... everyone who buys one gets blue)

If you are interested in volutneering this year, please email me at christina@bluelotustribe.org with your name, days you plan on attending Tribal Rev, and classes you're taking/shows you're attending or dancing in as well as the best phone number to reach you at and your best email address. Please use the email addy above to send the info as opposed to tribe private messaging so I can have all the responses in one place. Feel free to post here that you want to volunteer so that other volunteers can see who's on the team though. ;-)

I'm asking all volunteers to respond by May 15. I'll have everyone's assignments ready to send out to them by June 1.

Eyelash models needed!

One of the guys I work with is helping his wife find people who are willing to be eyelash models.

All you need is a face, no special experience required. You will be fitted with fake eyelashes. He's afraid HE will end up needing to stand in if she doesn't get enough people.

So -if you're available THIS Sunday anytime after 1:30pm, but BEFORE 4pm, and can be in Rosemont....let me know and I'll forward you all the details.

Or, if enough people post here, I'll post it tomorrow.

Saturday:

Tribal Rev Registration Deadline!!

Hey everyone! Today is the last day to regsiter for Tribal Rev workshops at the $30 rate. Tomorrow they go up to $35 and will stay at that price until the event. If you've been meaning to register, go to http://www.tribalrevolution.com and get it done today!! If you don't want to regsiter online, you can still download the form and mail it in, postmarked today, to get the $30 rate as well.

This year will be our biggest and our best. Don't forget our drum classes and a few classes (Karim's and Samira's) that are universal in subject and not just for Tribal dancers!!

The shows are going to be great too! Our hafla lineup is fantastic and the site is so much fun!! We have a beautiful theater for the Saturday night Gala Show starring our teachers...some of whom rarely get to the Midwest!!

A fond Blue Lotus farewell....

For the first time since Blue Lotus Tribe was born in 2001, we are losing a founding member. Seana started with us when she lived in Milwaukee and the moved to Madison to pursue her Master's Degree in Dance. While in Madison, she became a pioneer for tribal bellydance in that community, offering classes and securing performances for Blue Lotus Tribe, exposing the progressive city of Madison to tribal bellydance... and they embraced it!

Seana's classes have grown in membership and in number and Seana has become recognized in the Madison bellydance community as the tribal authority. After six years with Blue Lotus Tribe, Seana is filling the tribal void in Madison, forming her own professional tribal bellydance troupe, Ashar Dance Company.

Seana's parting is bittersweet for all of the members of our tribe, as we love her dearly as a friend and admire her as a dancer. We will miss her, but we are very proud of what she has accomplished in Madison and we wish her and Ashar every success. You will still see her performing at Tribal Revolution and perhaps in some collaborations with Blue Lotus Tribe down the road. For now though, we ask that you visit the Ashar website at http://www.asharbellydance.com and take a look at all that she is accomplishing. Seana also plans on setting up an Ashar Dance Company tribe here. When we know it's up, we'll let you all know.

Seana, we will miss you! You will forever remain our sister in dance!

Baby, Baby, Baby!!

Wendy had her baby!!

Gabriel Evan was born at 5:10 yesterday, March 27 via C-section. He was 9 lbs, 15 oz and 22 inches long.

!!!!!! 9 lbs, 15 oz??? Wow!!!!

Mom and baby are resting comfortably and mom is blissfully happy!!
