Ms. Zuza, Lesley Inman, and I (Akasha Afsana) have just launched a new Tribal/Tribal Fusion website for the Twin City area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) -and surrounding areas - in Minnesota. Please bookmark our website and take a look to see what we have coming up!

This website will have a bevy of information, such as upcoming shows and workshops, artists page with local teachers and talent, links to great purveyors of goods, dance schools and more! I just wanted to pop on and say THANK YOU to everyone who was even a teeny part of Tribal Revolution this year. There was so much positive energy this year and despite some weather challenges (Wettest. Tribal Rev. Ever) it was still a beautiful event!

To our teachers, Artemis, Zafira, Urban Gypsy, and Raquy and the Cavemen, thanks for inspiring classes, awesome performances, and tons of patience with the airlines and with us as we figured out how to get you all here! Special thanks to Olivia and Artemis for stepping up and teaching additional classes when we got the grim news that our lovely Sharon would be stuck in Seattle all weekend.

To our absent teacher Sharon Moore. Thank you for being so understanding and patient with the flight situation from Seattle. You handled the news of flight cancellation after flight cancellation with such grace. You were sorely missed and we WILL try again to have you here sometime!!

To all of the hafla performers. WOW!! Every performance was top-notch and beautiful. Everyone was amazed at the variety and quality of the performances! I dare say this was the best TR hafla thus far!! It almost scares me to think that it might get better every year!!

To Duende, Sarabi, and Amirah, our guest performers on Saturday. Beautiful!! Duende, you handled the music glitch expertly and with a good dose of humor. Sarabi and Amirah, thanks for answering the call and stepping in to perform at a moment's notice so we could have a full show of great performances *and* enough time for our teacher performers to change between acts!

To all of our volunteers..... Duende, Rakhshanda, Lotus Bloom, Michael, Mike, and Jo, and anyone else who helped out.... you know who you are. Knowing you are ALWAYS there to help us out, take care of the details, and make things run smoothly for us is such a comfort. This event is a LOT of work and the six of us can't do it alone, so thanks for ALWAYS being there!!

To the vendors: I'm convinced our vendor rooms are some of the most fun places to be at Tribal Rev. You supplied color, ambiance, and tons of pretty stuff that made our pocketbooks lighter and our hearts happier.... and always with a smile on your faces. Thanks to the Elk room vendors for their patience in dealing with the water issues.

To our awesome awesome awesome staff at the Holiday Inn!! I don't think any of them are on tribe, but when there was an issue they were on it STAT!! This event can't run smoothly without a good venue staff, so Liz, Vicente, Alberto, and everyone else..... YOU ROCK!!

To all of you tribal rev participants.... well, without you we'd be sitting in an empty ballroom all weekend losing lots and lots of money, so thank you most of all for supporting Tribal Revolution year after year or even if this was your first year! We look forward to many more great years of Tribal Rev!

So, those of you who came to Tribal Rev this year... what was your best or craziest or silliest or most inspirational moment at Tribal Revolution?

For me it was hanging out at Old Chicago on Friday night with my Blue Loti, Zafira, and Urban Gypsy. After all the work and planning that goes into this it's nice to get down to some hard-core silliness. Maria head-butted a glass of wine and my weekend was made!

those that played (and worked) .... old friends the Zafira ladies, new friends Amanda, Leize and damn it ...many more! (!) I am sooo bad at names.... YOU KNOW who you are... don't you? Will you remind me? Friend me here or on facebook..yes?

We had so much fun (once we got there!!) great vibe, good people, everything convenient, loved sharing our Urban Gypsy dance groove with those that love to move....and everyone did!

Met some new vendor friends too.... great eco-friendly, fair trade items, and plenty more surprises awaited me... I saw some old friends with their wares also..... my wallet feels like I sent some money flowing that'a way.... I hope every left with lighter baggage!

The Saturday show was inspiring,,, Artemis, Blue Lotus, Zafira, Raquy and Liron ... everyone...! Happy to be a part of a successful weekend and a sharing of knowledge, love and laughter...

Immerse Yourself in Zafira!

As you know, Tribal Rev boasts a number of fabulous classes with Zafira Dance Company (and several other awesome teachers too!) Want to take your training with Zafira to the next level? You're in luck!

Immediately after Tribal Revolution, I will be bringing Maria, Olivia and Christine to Milwaukee for a two day, 14 hour immersion. This goes beyond intensive - we'll be melding skill precision and stylistic expression training to really unleash your potential. That's why we're calling it the Collective Flow Experience.

The goal of the Collective Flow Experience is to provide a complete experience of the Zafira Dance Company’s dance philosophy, technique, and expression for the purposes of giving dancers tools and instruction on how to create their own authentic dance expression. With material never before presented by Zafira, the immersion will incorporate the following topics:

* Skill Mastery and Practice (Drills, Isolation, Layering)
* Stylization, Folk and Ethnic Dance elements (Rajasthani, Vaudeville, and many more.)
* Building Blocks of Dance Performance
* Building combinations where moves and gestures flow together seamlessly
* Expression and Creation of Performance - Bringing it all together (Choreography, developing concepts, narrative and musicality)

This Immersion is restricted to about 15 people to allow for hands on, personal correction and instruction.

At the end of the Immersion, each attendee will receive a decorative certificate of completion.This Immersion is for experienced dancers who are familiar with intermediate-advanced moves.

Where? The Orchard, West Allis, WI.

When? June 22nd & 23rd, 2009.

How Much? Early Bird Registration (until April 30th) is $400*. After April 15th, registration will raise to $500*. (+ Paypal fees if Paypal is used.)

Tribal Rev lowest prices extended!

Tribal Rev prices were due to go up on May 1, but since that's a Friday and some of you might be waiting for your paycheck to register, we're gonna give you a break and not raise the prices until Monday, May 4.

Single workshops are $30 until May 4, when they go up to $35
The Whole Enchilada is $300 until May 4, when it will go up to $340

Hi Tribal Revolution Attendees,

I'll be coordinating the volunteers this year! We're looking for people to assist with workshop check-in, show ticket taking, meal ticket taking, and at the registration table. For the most part, volunteers work areas of the event they will already be at (if you're taking a Zafira workshop... maybe you'll do check-in for the Zafira workshop).

If anyone is interested in helping out, please contact me here or via email (esmeraydances@gmail.com) with your name and a few ways to get in touch with you (tribe/other email/phone number) if you're interested. It might also be helpful to put, "volunteer", in the subject line if emailing. I check tribe daily and will likely be checking in several times a day through Tribal Rev. What are your goals (dance or otherwise) for 2009? I'll start:

Dance:
Master some new techniques I picked up in workshops and use them in a choreography project
Be a better Lotus
Expand my class and workshop offerings
Finally go through and dance to all those DVDs I picked up in 2008
Attend more local events and workshops
Challenge myself to create more choreographies instead of relying on my improv skills when I perform

Otherwise:
Paint my office and hallway
Continue organizing the basement
Become more involved in my community and my son's school
Organize YEARS or photos and get them into albums
Eat less. Move more.
Sew. Get rid of the fabric stash from Hell

Makeup question for y'all!

Hi everyone! I've just done another cleanout of my makeup stash and I got to thinking... how many of you out there keep track of when you bought your makeup and dispose of it at the recommended time? I toss stuff out when it appears to be breaking down or when I simply don't use it anymore, but I've never been good at tracking my purchase times and staying true to when I should get rid of stuff.

For reference here are the timelines in an article I read recently that got me thinking about this....

Foundation--1 year
Powder eyeshadow--1 year
Mascara--3 months
Blush or bronzer--2 years
Lipstick--1 year
Nail polish--1 year

evidently lip and eye pencils will keep up to three years if you keep them clean and sharpen before each use.

So, who's a good girl (or boy.. Hi Val & Frank!!) and purges makeup by the calendar?

We have plenty of performance pictures from most years (if you have some from 06 that you'd like to send though, that would be great!!), but what we really need are pictures of the FUN!! I see y'all every year in goofy poses having the time of your lives, but we're usually too busy to take those pictures. We're looking for snapshots that will showcase the family feel of Tribal Revolution. Pics of vendors would be great too!

Light and prayers for my nephew, please.

Out of tragedy can come hope. The tragedy is that a young person in the Denver area recently passed away. The hope is that he is a perfect match for my nephew who is at the top of the state list for a kidney donor. Little Joseph is three years old and has been on dialysis for his entire life so far.

Surgery is today. Anyone who has some spare light or prayers or whatever, please send some his way.... and also send a some to the family and friends of his donor so that they may begin to heal.

I just received Renaissance Magazine issue #63 which includes an extensive photo layout of Pennsic. The photos were taken by Darter, perhaps?

I'm curious to know who the soloist dancer is on page 77; all I can say is her costume is burgundy and she's in full layback so her face is obscured. She is dancing with a sword if that helps.(?)

Wonderful photo of Serendipity too, btw.

Baby number two for Wendy arrived August 27 (sorry for the delayed report.... we've been REAL busy!!). This time she had a beautiful girl named Evelyn Grace. Evelyn came into this world a healthy 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 19 inches long. The whole family is doing well and falling in love with their newest little angel. I'm sure pics will follow. ;-)

I am VERY excited that it’s finally here – I’ve waited a long, long time - and now I finally have my own business of custom-made, one-of-a-kind bellydance clothing line. There are many wonderful designers out there, and I’m glad there’s enough opportunity for us all. I feel very lucky to have my own business and getting to do something I love ~ designing and sewing!

I like individuality; therefore I try to reflect that in my designs by having limited run fabrics in an array of funky, fun, and functional styles & colors. Keep checking for news designs to come!

This past weekend I attended Midwest Tribal Mafia and Chicago, IL. First off, I had a great time but I usually do when i go to Chicago. Second, mad props to the Godmothers and much thanks to the Donnas!!! The concept of this event is awesome. The Midwest has got talent!!!!

The Workshops:
I didn't take all of the workshops but here is a brief review of the ones i did take.

The first workshop was with Rakhshanda from Milwaukee. Their workshop focused on fusing Rajasthani with Tribal style. Great class! The moves were broken down and it flowed very well. I left with an awesome combo and ideas. they had excellent structure in their teaching methods.

The second workshop was with Hipnotic from Chicago. Again, a great class! They taught several short and sweet combos that had that Hipnotic funkiness! I liked this because i was able to absorb and retain what i was learning. Again, the combos were broken down well and drilled a million times. Plus, Jatare and Neta are always entertaining and created a fun atmosphere!!

The third and final workshop was with the Gypsy Queens. I think this workshop has inspired me to do floorwork which is something i generally shy away from. Karen taught excellent ways to get to the floor and how to play with floorwork and make it look GOOD. Stephanie was on patrol making corrections to prevent injury. Both created an comfortable and safe atmosphere for learning.

The Venues:

The studio where the workshops took place was a lovely studio and met the needs of the participants (i.e. places to put your stuff, changing room, bathrooms, a little kitchen, comfy couches). Plus, there were places to eat and grab coffee within walking distance. this is very important when in Chicago.

The theater was to die for....nice dressing rooms, great stage, great sound.

As for the show, I only saw two acts because I was in the first and second act and was back stage most of the time. Hopefully most of the performances will be on youtube. check it out!!!!

SCA- Known World Dance Symposium 2009

For all our SCA friends out there, I'm happy to announce that the Known World Dance Symposium, a fabulous event that takes place every other year in places all over the "Known World" (it's been in various US locations, as well as the Australian continent!), will be held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Kingdom of Ealdormere) from July 2nd-5th, 2009. This event focuses on dance, and to a lesser extent music, from the Middle Ages, and is packed with fabulous classes on actual dances, theory, history, along with opportunities to dance all night long, and generally geek out with people who are passionate about dancing!
There will be a focus on both European and Middle Eastern styles of dance, with classes during the days and haflas at night. We are currently in the process of looking for teachers for dance and music tracks. If you're interested in teaching Middle Eastern dance, performing, helping out, playing music, teaching music or coming out and learning and partying with us, please contact me here on tribe or Lord Darius (info below) for more information! We'd love to see you in Ealdormere next July!

Less than 2 weeks to Moria in Chicago!!

If you've been sitting on the fence about coming to the Moria Bootcamp workshops, it's time to jump off and register!! Because of the holiday weekend, these workshops will be smaller than usual, which means more potential for individual attention from Moria!!

However, if you wait until the last minute to register, you may miss your chance. BDSS has a minimum number of students that we have to reach by Friday or the workshops and show will all be canceled (and that will really piss of Frank, who is coming all the way from Colorado for this!!). We only need a few more registrations to make it happen, but we need them by Friday!!

If you're planning on coming, get that registration in so we can have this fantastic weekend together!

The ethics of name-dropping

We can all agree that networking and making connections is a very good thing (tm) in this business. It's a very community-driven business and it's good to know and experience lots of people. Along our path, we all find teachers and mentors we grow close to and credit some of our dance learning to. We also perform with other dancers or musicians sometimes, sharing the stage and a common goal for putting on a wonderful show.

However....

At what point can one claim to have "trained with" or "studied with" someone? One workshop? Several workshops spaced out over several years? A weeklong intensive? Months of weekly classes and regular workshops? Years even? In other words, when it is okay to drop names and claim someone as having been your teacher and a formative force in your dance education?

By the same token, at what point can one claim to have "performed with" someone else? Dancing separately but in the same show? Performing once together with no joint preparation? Coordinating, planning, and rehearsing a performance together? Months or years of being in an official partnership or troupe with someone? Where is the line between sharing a venue and "performing with" another dancer?

I ask because I have seen some rather questionable lists citing all of those dancers one has "trained with" or "performed with" by dancers with only a few years at best under their bellydance belts. It seems to me nearly impossible to "train with" dozens of teachers in the span of 2-3 years to the point where every teacher has had a lasting and profound effect on the dancer enough to claim them as a teacher. Similarly, I find it hard to believe that someone of the same experience has collaborated on so many projects as to have dozens of "performed with" credits racked up.

Thoughts and opinions are welcome.

New TR website!

Now that TR is over and the dust has settled, I've had time to put together a newer, prettier, more functional website. Okay, so it's not terribly informative right now since we're still setting up the classes and schedule and all that, but it *will* be more functional in 2009 when we open registration. Even so, there's *some* info on the teacher and location pages.

Anyway, check it out! Many of the changes happened because of the Tribal Rev feedback forms (see? we DO read them and listen!). We;d like to know what you think of the newest version!

Moria Chappell Show venue change!!

Hey there! We've had to move the August 30 Moria Chappell show to a new location in Elgin. It will now be held at the Sears Family Gallery Theater at Elgin Academy. 350 Park St. in Elgin. In many ways this space is going to work out better for us! The info has been changed on the website and there will be a corrected downloadable registration form up there very soon.

Hey - I was there, so I KNOW that the workshops had a LOT to talk about.

There's a tribe out there - Bellydance Reviews - that could really benefit from hearing about all the great workshops and performances at Tribal Revolution. Not only does it get the word out there about your favorite teachers, but it also get the work out there about your favorite events (Tribal REV of course!) and allows Blue Lotus Tribe to make it bigger and better each year.

I'm the moderator, so it's a little odd for me to write all the reviews. So PLEASE! Come out to the Bellydance Reviews Tribe, and share what your experiences were. Everyone benefits when we share knowledge about the community. And be honest. It's ok if there was something a teacher could do better. I believe the teachers use this information as well!.

Tribal Rev Hafla Video Available to Participants!!

We all know that YouTube is an awesome way to share our performance and promote ourselves in the belly dance community. Unfortunately, not everyone is video savy or even has access to the software and gear necesary to make it happen. I am willing to set up a 2 camera shoot, do the editting, and compression in order to post your video on YouTube. I can email the file to you for review and have it posted no later than Wed. June 25th. I would only be recording those groups who have made arrangements with me in advance. Any takers?? Feedback?

This Fundamentals workshop will focus on pairing quick muscle contractions with the isolations to create sharp, strong accent movements with plenty of "oomph!" Building a music community? (x-post)

Tribal Revolution has just wrapped up and we had melody classes (taught by the lovely Melissa Murphey of Ishtar) for the first time. They were a hit! We also had a TON of live music with Carmine Guida, August Herr from Mezmer Society, and Gaiananda. It was a total blast and it got me thinking.....

How many of you or folks you know who play an instrument would be interested in a couple of music-focused events in the Chicago area? All would be welcome to bring whatever instrument you play, Middle-Eastern or not and learn songs and ensemble skills. There'd be classes in drumming at different levels and melody making from playing basic tunes to playing a taqsim. In the evening we'd have a "jaslah," which is Melissa's term for a more music focused hafla.... a real jam session with open dancing but no dance performing.

I'm thinking I might do this a few times a year to create a musical series and build a Midwestern music community to go along with our booming dance community. All of the above named entities are interested in making this happen, but I can't bring them all here if nobody's coming to the workshops and jaslah!

How 'bout it Chi-town and beyond? Interested?

I am writing my master's thesis on Tribal belly dance for Visual and Critical Studies (when not dancing I'm a grad student at California College of the Arts). As part of my research I'm writing about Tribal belly dance festivals and trying to collect interviews from attendees about their experiences.

If you attended Tribal Revolution this year, or even in previous years, and would be willing to answer a few short questions via email about your experience of the event, please leave a comment and/or PM me.

For Tribal Revolutions; this event just seems to get better and better. I had a wonderful time seeing old friends and meeting new ones, dancing in the hafla, taking classes and the show Saturday night was incredible.

So the one thing us Loti have no time for during Tribal Rev is taking pictures all weekend. Our trusty photographer, Dale, moved too far away to come shoot for us this year. Now, I'm looking over in my friends' recently added pictures and am seeing dozens from our little event here.

Post 'em to our tribe!! Let everyone see how much fun ya had! Class pics, hafla pics, show pics, pics of you drunk at the bar, pics of you nekkid in the pool (use photoshop's blur tool first though, please), pics of the after hafla, pics of all the stuff you bought, pics of the stuff you wanted but didn't buy, pics, pics, pics!!

August and I had a GREAT time at Tribal Rev.

The workshop attendees were willing to work hard as hard as they were asked,
the shows were a pleasure, folks were warm and sassy,
the music was so delicious, and of course we stayed up all night making merry at hafla after hafla.

So I think I can speak for the Mezmer Society, in hereby issuing an official 'Thanks!'

Back from Tribal Fest!!

... and we had a rockin' good time!! The highlights.....

* hanging out with the Skellramics chicks every time we needed to get out of the sun (thanks, Kelly & Natasha!).
* taking tons of great workshops... especially Laura. Seemed like she took 3-4 every damn day!!
* teaching our two workshops. Our students were the best and we had so much fun with them!!
* performing!! We did a 15 minute set, complete with our finale guest, Karim Nagi and a buncha our friends standing off to the side grinning at us. (video coming soon!)
* shopping.... we all did way too much of it!
* chillin' with our Hipnotic homies and glad to have more Chi-town tribal representation there!
* parking lot rehearsals
* very amusing conversation with the Shell gas station lady when we went on a chips-n-chocolate run.

Yeah.. it was a blast! We hope to go back again and we hope to bring more of the Midwest with us!

Tribal Rev photo shoots?

Hey everyone! We were wondering if there'd be any interest in setting up a photo studio at Tribal Rev with a professional photographer to do one hour shoots. His rate is $250 (he's really good... he's shot BDSS!!) and he would require a $100 deposit. There are limited time slots available (max 10) for troupes or soloists. Is there any interest? He'd need to book a few (with deposit) before June 1 to be able to come out here from New York. Interested?

Another Tribal Rev Deadline---Saturday!!

Saturday is the last day for a lot of things in Tribal Rev Land... behold:

- Last day to order "the whole enchilada"
- Last day to order any meals
- Last day to order workshops at the current price. They go up another $5 on Sunday

SUNDAY is the last day to get your info to Andrea if you're in the hafla. Missing this deadline could mean being cut from the show!

Our hotel block is now closed, so no more rooms at our group rate are available. The hotel information will remain on the website along with alternative hotels if you want to shop for a better rate in the vicinity.

We're in the home stretch folks!! Whee!!

Tribal Rev Volunteers

Okay... I KNOW I did this before but I can't find the post or the responses or...

... maybe I didn't do this before!

Anyway, several of you peeps out there have come up to me at various events and said you'd volunteer at tribal rev this year and that's GREAT!! I'm trying to assemble a list of volunteers and email addresses so that I can start to coordinate y'all! Most jobs involve things like checking passes at the door of workshops, taking and/or selling tickets to the shows, taking meal passes, hunting down hotel personnel for more water, etc..... Nobody's volunteer job will take away from your tribal rev experience by causing you to miss workshops, shows, or meals you are paying for! We promise!!

If you want to be on my official list o' volunteers, please respond here if you *know* i have your email addy, or send me an email to christina@bluelotustribe.org and I'll put you on the list.

I'll start organizing you wonderful volunteers next week!
